Ken 'spider' webb
Ken 'Spider' Webb began his radio career at 12-years old in amateur radio (WA2BQM) while growing up in Amityville, Long Island, New York. He began commercial radio in 1966 in Long Island at radio station, WBAB-AM & FM. At the same time Ken was an Instructor in the Department of Speech & Theatre in New York’s, City University at Brooklyn College. He was asked to join Frankie Crocker in the ‘new’, New York FM station WBLS-FM to host the morning show in 1971.
After working in both locations until 1975, he chose to remain in the morning slot at WBLS-FM. While there the new station grew to be the number one morning show serving the New York metro area listeners. In 1982 Ken moved to WRKS-FM (KISS-FM) for two years and then back to WBLS-FM. This move was repeated two times taking the number one audience with him both times and enjoying the number-one position until 1999. During that final year he was joined by his daughter, ‘Teri’ Webb in the morning slot.Teri went to Philadelphia to Smooth Jazz station WJJZ-FM and hosted mornings and afternoons for 10 years.
In 1982 while on the air in New,York Ken began his weekly syndicated Contemporary Jazz show, ‘Jazz From the City’ (JFC), which he serviced from his home-office, as high at 40 stations in the U.S., Japan, The Philippines, Dubai and Caribbean radio stations. Ken not only hosted weekly JFC weekly radio shows, but on stage at those locations.
Beginning 2021 Ken and Teri continued the JFC syndicated show via 5 streaming internet platforms, WPVT, WDIP, R&B103, iSoulRadio.com and the New York popular Smooth Jazz CD1019.com.
Appearances:Recognized as a popular New York city and national award-wining personality, Ken has appeared on television’s ABC Eyewitness News, Midday Live, Tony Brown’s Journal, ABC…Good Morning Show, The McCreary Report, CBS and The Tokyo Japan Radio Network. Ken has voiced many ‘national ‘radio and TV commercials.
Stage Hosting:Consistently in demand to serve as Master of Ceremonies, Ken has hosted major concerts on local, national and international stages including Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, The Beacon theatre, and the World Famous Apollo theatre (NY). He has also hosted concerts in Haiti, Japan, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Concerts have included; George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Phyllis Hyman, Natalie Cole and a host of others. The attest to his solid reputation of working with the best in the entertainment industry.
Community Service:On the ‘Community Service’ side of things, Ken founded both the ‘WLBS SURE-SHOTS’ and the ‘WRKS KISS KARDS’ benefit basketball teams which raised community funds to help various community efforts ranging from organizations to needy families in the radio coverage areas. As a member of the team and an active player, Ken takes on great pride in his image as a wholesome role model, often lecturing to schools and various community groups on the necessity of a good education and the perils of substance abuse. Despite his hectic schedule, Ken still finds time to donate his talent to numerous local and national non-profit organizations.
